About the Foundation

Dr. Marija Veljaca Foundation was established on March 11, 2005 in memory of Dr. Marija Veljača, a medical doctor and a research scientist in the field of gastroenterology.

The purpose of the foundation is to raise funding and provide assistance to individuals who are pursuing a career in medicine or research science and whose primary goal is to help others, by providing such individuals with:

  • scholarships to assist with medical school tuition;
  • funds for books, publications, magazines, lab fees and the like while attending medical school;
  • funds for living expenses while attending medical school; and
  • other similar sources of support.

The foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. The tax-exempt ID # is: 52-2454112. Donations to the foundation are tax-deductible.

Number of scholarships: 1

The amount of the scholarship: $3,000

Period: 2019/2020 academic year

Payment type: the scholarship is in US $. The amount will be paid in one installment by check or wire transfer.

Eligible candidates: medical students and research scientists in the area of medical sciences attending an accredited program.

Selection criteria:

  • Academic excellence as evident from the Grade Point Average, letters of recommendations and past awards received
  • Commitment to helping others as evident from the personal statement and letters of recommendation
  • Need of financial support as evident from the personal statement and letters of recommendation

Application materials: please include the following documents in your application:

  • Application Form (download and fill in the application form from the foundation's website)
  • Personal Statement
  • Curriculum Vitae
  • One letter of recommendation
  • Proof of enrollment
  • Copies of university transcripts (courses attended and grades received). Photocopies are acceptable.

The candidate selection announcement: the candidate will be selected and the announcement will be made by April 4, 2020. We are sorry, but we cannot contact all applicants who do not receive the scholarship.
